Valdez, AK
This past summer my family and I took a trip to Valdez! The drive took us about five and a half hours. This was in part due to delays by road construction. From Anchorage, the drive to Valdez is 299 miles (481 km). The drive from Palmer to Valdez is very pretty and on a clear day you can see the mountains near the road and those far off in the distance. If you are visiting Alaska and want to drive a long and beautiful scenic route, then I would highly recommend driving to Valdez. An interesting fact is that Valdez is known to be one of the snowiest towns…

Katmai National Park, Alaska
Earlier this summer, in July, some of my family members and I took a trip to Katmai National Park to see the Brooks Falls. Brooks Falls is most famous for its brown bears, which hang out there in the summer catching salmon. If you have ever seen a photo from Alaska of bears catching fish in the water, chances are that the photo was taken at either Brooks Falls or the McNeil River. Every summer, brown bears gather at the falls to catch the sockeye salmon that are swimming upstream. We took off from Anchorage for an hour long flight. When we landed in King Salmon we took a quick…

Homer, AK
Homer is by far one of my favorite places to visit in Alaska. Homer is a small town with a population of around 5,800. What is unique about Homer is its’ peninsula. The “Spit” as it is called is a narrow strip of land that extends about four and a half miles into the ocean. Room and Board There are several places you can stay in Homer but I would recommend staying out on the Spit if possible. The reasons being that you can walk outside, be right there on the beach, and that there are a lot of restaurants and shops within walking distance. While I have stayed at…

Canyonlands, Utah to Eagle River, Alaska
Canyonlands National Park Our next stop was the Canyonlands National Park, where we camped there for two nights. While we were staying there we went on a 5.5 mile hike with incredible views. We also got to take a cool photo in a slot canyon. Back at the campsite we went climbing on the rock formations. The rocks here are a reddish color, very different from back home. I also managed to make toast on a stick over our campfire! The decision and Arches National Park This is where our trip took a turn for the worse. During our last day of camping my dad got cancelations for the next…
