Homer, AK

Me on a cool beach swing under the boardwalk of the place we stayed.

Homer is by far one of my favorite places to visit in Alaska. Homer is a small town with a population of around 5,800. What is unique about Homer is its’ peninsula. The “Spit” as it is called is a narrow strip of land that extends about four and a half miles into the ocean.

Room and Board

There are several places you can stay in Homer but I would recommend staying out on the Spit if possible. The reasons being that you can walk outside, be right there on the beach, and that there are a lot of restaurants and shops within walking distance.

While I have stayed at several different places in Homer, my all time favorite is the Wheelhouse! It is a beautiful, small, and quaint place to stay and is located on a boardwalk on the Spit. This house on the beach sleeps seven, has two bathrooms, and a kitchenette. It is within a strip of shops and restaurants on a boardwalk right over the ocean.

Food

There are many other places to eat, these are just some of my favorites!

Breakfast

My all time favorite breakfast place in Homer is Wild Honey Bistro. Their specialty is Crepes! They have a wide variety of sweet and savory Crepes.

Dessert (although any time of the day is good for ice cream!)

A personal favorite of mine is Carmen’s Gelato, which is located on the Spit. It’s a very short walk from the Wheelhouse where we stayed. They have unique and delicious flavors of Gelato.

Dinner/Lunch

The Little Mermaid is also a good place to eat, they have everything from seafood to pizza. It used to be located on the Spit, but has since relocated to downtown Homer.

AJ’s Steakhouse and Tavern is a more high end place, their food is excellent, my personal favorite are the Scallops!

Things to do there

There are many things to do in Homer, you will never be bored!

Beachcombing is a lot of fun, and whether you take a boat across the water or just walk along the Spit, you can find sea-glass, shells, and jellyfish.

A Sea Nettle Jellyfish I found while beach combing.

You can take a boat across Kachemak Bay and hike Grace Ridge. A beautiful 8.3 mile hike. We did this hike a couple of years ago. A water taxi drops you off on one end and picks you up at the other end later in the day. Down below are two photos of us hiking Grace Ridge in 2018.

You can walk around the Spit, where there are restaurants and cool shops. Or you can walk around the harbor, where you can gawk at some of the very interesting and creative names on the sides of some of the boats.

You can find a fishing guide to take you fishing out in the ocean. My favorite place to go fishing is Humpy Creek across Kachemak Bay. My dad and I took a water taxi there and just had fun fishing for pink salmon all day long!
