Bananas Foster
Bananas Foster is a delicious dessert made of bananas and a sweet caramel like sauce. Bananas Foster originated in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was first made in 1951 by a woman named Ella Brennan. She made this new dessert in honor of a man named Richard Foster (who was the New Orleans Crime Commission chairman). As you can obviously see, that’s how it got it’s name. This recipe is great if you have slightly squishy bananas that you don’t want to eat.
I am going to show you two ways of making bananas foster. One way is quick and easy, without using the stove. The other is an on the stove version.
The best way to eat the dessert is to pour it over a bowl of vanilla ice cream! If you don’t eat it over vanilla ice cream, decrease the amount of butter you use just a little.
Microwave version
You can find recipes online that will tell you the precise measurements to make this dessert, but I prefer to throw everything in a pot and taste to see if it is missing anything. There isn’t a way to mess this dessert up!
When I made this dessert we were staying at a hotel and we had a couple of squishy bananas, brown sugar, and butter.
You will need: (Makes 1 Serving)
- 1 Banana
- 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons of butter (sliced)
- A pinch of Cinnamon (optional)
Take the banana and slice it up. Put the slices on a microwavable plate or as you can see in my photo I didn’t have a plate so I used part of a pizza box (it tasted just the same).
Put the brown sugar on top. If you want to put some cinnamon in, do it now. Then put the slices of butter on top.
I put mine in the microwave for one to two minutes. Basically just take it out when the butter is melted and you can see the brown sugar dissolving. Take it out and give it a good stir. You may find that it needs more time if the banana isn’t soft. Enjoy!
The Stovetop version
You will need: (Makes 1 Serving)
- 1 Banana
- 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons of butter (sliced)
- A pinch of Cinnamon (optional)
Put your brown sugar, butter, bananas and cinnamon (if you are using it) into a pot.
Heat on low/medium until the bananas are soft. It’s ok to let it boil, just make sure it doesn’t burn. Serve and eat! Enjoy!
